Nutrient Neutrality

Nutrient Neutrality

The nutrient mitigation market works whereby housing developers located in specific water catchments are required to mitigate the nutrient impact that their development has on the river. This has been mandatory in 74 catchments across England since March 2022 and the government is currently reshaping the policy under the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. There are two nutrient mitigation credits which are relevant and please do get in touch if you want any more information:

  • Phosphate Credits – Excess phosphate can have a negative impact on freshwater river systems. Farmers can provide phosphate credits through registered mitigation projects, including taking very particular areas out of production, creating wetlands, cover cropping and upgrading septic tanks.
  • Nitrate Credits – Excess nitrates can have a negative impact in sensitive harbours and estuaries. Farmers can provide nitrate credits through registered mitigation projects, including taking very particular areas out of production, creating wetlands and cover cropping.
